-materials needed
In order to start a balloon arch, you will need some materials. Make sure you have everything you need before you get started, or you may have to stop in the middle to run out and get something. This can be frustrating and cause delays.
you will need the following:
a balloon pump
fishing wire
scissors
balloons
I recommend different sizes but you can definitely get away with just grabbing a bag of all the same size and blowing them up in different sizes! I do like to get at least 1 or a couple of the BIG BIG balloons 17″ or 36″
clear command strips ( for hanging )
extras – if you want –
balloon glue dots
extra specialty foil balloons
since valentines day is right around the corner, I will link some of my favorite specialty valentines foil balloons!
Set up your work space
You have to make sure you have an open and clear workspace. you don’t want anything around that is sharp that can pop the balloons either! Make sure the floor is clear and clean.
tips and tricks
Step 1
take your balloon pump and set it up on a clear counter or table space.
pick your first color you are going to work with. Take 2 balloons and stretch them out good.
you want to make sure you stretch them good before blowing them up to avoid them popping.
Put one balloon on each of the pumps spouts.
push down on the larger spout to begin inflation of both spouts. – hold with a tight grip as the the balloons will begin to inflate.
pull the balloons off the spouts and hold the ends shut to keep the air inside. rearrange your grip.
Step 2
you can either do this on the table or against your body.
you want to push down on the middle of the balloon gently as you let a little bit of air out to push in a give it a rounder shape. do not let out too much air. and it is okay if the size of the balloons are not the same!
step 3.
now you can tie the 2 balloons together. we do not want to tie them individually. cross the balloons and flip on over the other. proceed to tie the ends together into a knot. you will now have a set of two.
continue to do this. with each color I am using, I like to make 12 sets of 2 for each section.
step 4
once you have your sets of 2. you will begin connecting your sets of 2 together to create quads… sets of 4.
you simply put 2 sets of 2 together and cross two balloons over each other. intertwining them together. it truly is so easy. now you should have 3 sets of 4.
step 5.
take your fishing wire and cut a decent length of string. you want to leave around 2 feet of string on the end of the first quad set of balloons. so start the string there and start wrapping the fishing wire around the balloons a few times. then take the next set of quads and push it against the first set already attached to the string. hold it tight and start wrapping the string around the second set of balloons. take the third set of quads and do the same thing against the second set of quads. you now have a full section of your balloon arch. you can continue adding to this with the same method and the same color or you can start a new color and begin the same process. and then add those together.
that is the beauty of this method. it truly is so customizable. you can create whatever you want, however you want. you can hang it however you want. you can make it long and horizontal, you can make it vertical and short, you can arch it like a rainbow or you can do a whole balloon wall. Its totally up to you and the possibilities are endless!
step 6
EXTRAS
if you are happy with how it looks, then AMAZING!
if you want to be even more creative! then you can go wild, and do the look with the smaller 5″ balloons accents and do the same method! create sets of 2. merge the sets of 2 into sets of 4 and then just use the fishing wire to add those into the arch wherever you want.
If you have special large foil balloons, simply blow those up ( sometimes it is best to use a hand pump for those to avoid them popping ) and use the glue dots to glue them to a balloon on the arch that looks best!
step 7.
depending on where or how you are hanging it, you can use tape, clear command strips, use nails that are already in a wall… get creative! literally use whatever you can!
for this balloon arch, It is on a inflatable jump house… so I used the fishing wire to tie it to the balloons and wrap it extra tight around the balloons and then wrap it around the top sides of the bounce house. then in the middle I used more fishing wire and also wrapped it around the middle of the bounce house to hold the middle section of the balloons up. If there is nothing around, I highly suggest PLANNING AHEAD and getting command strips! you will thank yourself later!
